To Investors :
The Dollar Is Finally Falling... and that's good news to the stock market. As of today, the exchange rate of USD to SGD, is about 1.37-1.38... comparing to few weeks ago, the exchange rate had ever hit as high as 1.41 and it was indeed stressful to the capital market to digest the post-effect of stronger dollars resulted from the rising interest rate. However, here come another question : If the effect of rising interest rate of strengthening the US Dollar seem dissipated so fast, what likely can happen next if rate hike no longer work to suppress the inflation... Will the USD still able to maintain its leading position as the most traded currency in the world for the next decade, we need to pay attention to the global currency trends as it can direct impact our own currency too.
Singapore
Our foreign reserves (foreign exchange reserves are assets held on reserve by a central bank in foreign currencies) had shrieked as data shown last week, and STI also seem weaker after the declared dividend from the banks had passed the ex-date last week.
Beside political stability, another topic of discussion may influence the decision of fund managers to chose their strategic business locations to park their money include how supportive the country towards LGBT community, investors should take note.
Is Global Economic Decoupling unavoidable?
Today, many countries had been gearing up to look for another countries to form partnership or alliances, in ramping up their own competitive advantages as well as defense capabilities to protect themselves against common rivalries in the event of war. As such, protectionism was once again take centre stage among policy makers, with more and more countries started to restrict exportation to ensure its own domestic demands are met. Since 2018, the former US president, Donald Trump, had been implementing trade protectionism include tariffs, quotas, and subsidies to promote domestic companies by making foreign goods relatively more expensive. Last week, the recent new act, U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, was introduced by Biden to subsidize U.S. domestic chip companies with billion of dollars for new manufacturing facilities, research and development. It meant to aim in boosting U.S. competitiveness against China and other foreign rivals. So, how bad is the news to the chip-making companies around the world: I believe the competition of chip-making industry will ramp up in 2023. Investors can consider to sell by this year end if you have chip making companies in your portfolio as I still expect the chip makers to rebound in pricing for the coming 2-3 months.
